New York, April 30, 2010 – The 18th Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD 18) will be held from May 3rd to 14th, 2010 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The CSD is one of the most important forums within the UN to address the environment and sustainable development. WEDO will be, as always, an active participant. Eleanor Blomstrom, Sustainable Development and Climate Change Coordinator, will speak on a panel entitled “Women and Sustainable Development”, held by the International Steering Committee of the United Nation’s Civil Society Development Forum. The panel is part of the NGO preparations for the United Nations Economic and Social Council’s review of international development goals, with specific attention to gender equality and women’s empowerment. New York, April 26, 2010 — WEDO celebrates the life and accomplishments of Godelieve Karikurubu, an environmental and gender advocate from Burundi.
She was a colleague and ally of WEDO and gender and climate change work through the Women Delegates Fund (WDF). While her unexpected passing is tragic news for her family, friends, colleagues and the countless women to whom she dedicated her work, we can admire the enormous positive contribution she made to her community, her country and women around the world.
