WEDO announces Side Event at UNFCCC meeting in Bonn- June 1st, 2010

New York, May 18, 2010- Improving National Implementation: Highlighting Gender Equality and Women’s Participation

With examples of gender plans of action from different regions, the Women’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO), the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the Global Gender and Climate Alliance (GGCA) will convene partners from the Environmental Ministry of Mozambique, the Environmental Protection Agency of Ghana, and the Central American Initiative to highlight the importance of gender considerations in implementing national climate change plans.

The event will be held on Tuesday, 1 June 2010

Preparing for Rio+20: stakeholder meeting on May 15th

New York, May 17, 2010- WEDO was pleased to support the Rio +20 preparatory meeting, “New Foundations for the Future: Looking Ahead to Earth Summit 2012″, organized by Stakeholder Forum and the United Nations Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS).

The meeting brought together over 200 representatives of government, multilateral institutions, and civil society to elicit discussion and key messages for input into the first preparatory meeting of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio +20) taking place this week at the UN Headquarters.

Women and Sustainable Development Panel Featuring Eleanor Blomstrom

Eleanor Blomstrom, Sustainable Development and Climate Change Coordinator, will speak on a panel entitled “Women and Sustainable Development”, held by the International Steering Committee of the United Nation’s Civil Society Development Forum. The panel is part of the NGO preparations for the United Nations Economic and Social Council’s review of international development goals, with specific attention to gender equality and women’s empowerment. The panel will take place on Tuesday, May 4th at 3:15-4:45pm.

WEDO’s Rachel Harris at Franciscans International

Franciscans International is hosting its First Annual Training Program on May 1st-2nd in preparation for the 18th Session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD).  The program starts at 9am Saturday morning and will take place at the International Catholic Organizations Center at 323 East 47th Street (Holy Family Church building, 3rd Floor). WEDO’s Rachel Harris will lead a session on “The UN Millennium Development Goals, Climate Change & Poverty from 10:45am-12pm on May 1st.
