Gender takes center stage at the UN Millennium Development Goals Informal Interactive Hearings

 New York, June 29 2010 – From June 14th- 15th, government representatives as well as non-governmental, civil society, and private sector representatives gathered at the UN Headquarters in New York to take part in an informal interactive hearing to provide input to the preparatory process for the September 2010 ‘MDG Summit’.

The hearings touched upon the main initiatives currently being undertaken at WEDO, namely: global governance reform to advance gender equalty and women’s empowerment, promoting women’s political participation, and engaging in global climate change advocacy.

High Level Meeting on Gender and Climate Change

New York, April 21, 2010 — On Wednesday April 21st, WEDO particiated in a panel on ‘Financing Climate Change: Gender Equality’ in preparation for the ECOSOC Annual Ministerial Review. The event was co-sponsored by UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the NGO Committee on the Status of Women/NY.

Gender and Climate Change Training in Vietnam

Hanoi/New York, June 9, 2010– From May 24th to 26th 2010, WEDO organized a three-day training of trainers on gender and climate change in Hanoi, Vietnam, in partnership with the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM). Approximately forty people took part in the training, including representatives from UN agencies, donors, line ministri…es, the National Assembly, the Viet Nam Women’s Union and national and international NGOs, to discuss linkages between gender and climate change and build the capacity of each individual to develop gender mainstreaming strategies in their respective areas of work.

President of UN General Assembly receives global petition for urgent establishment of stronger UN women’s agency

New York, June 17 2010– The Gender Equality Architecture Reform (GEAR) Campaign, which WEDO co-coordinates, today presented the President of the UN General Assembly, Dr. Ali Abdussalam Treki with its global petition and pressed for the UN to establish a strong new agency for women by July 2010. The petition, signed by 34,555 women and men from 165 countries and territories and bound with the Campaign’s slogan “GEAR UP!” was handed over to Dr. Treki, whilst all 192 UN member states of the General Assembly were meeting to negotiate a draft resolution that would establish the agency.

The Women and Gender Constituency speaks out at Bonn

Bonn, June 9, 2010 — The Women and Gender Consituency at the UNFCCC has been hard at work during the Bonn negotiations, advocating for the rights of women and ensuring that gender is mainstreamed throughout the negotiating text. Together, we delivered a number of strategic interventions into the negotiation, advocating on:

  • Climate financing- establishing a finance mechanism for climate-related funding which allows effective and equitable access to both women and men and which reaches the most vulnerable communities.
  • Gender sensitive research- conducting a systematic review of existing research on gender in relation to the Convention and implementing a mandatory inclusion
