[ November 30, 2010 6:30 pm to November 30, 2011 8:00 pm. ] CARE International and the Women’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO) are partnering on a side event at UNFCCC COP-17 on November 30, 2011 from 6:30-8pm in the Hex River Room. This event will use an interactive discussion format to explore the complexities of vulnerability from a gender perspective and make recommendations to input into an adaptation framework that works for everyone.

Cancun, Mexico- In the halls of the UNFCCC negotiations its not uncommon to hear calls for action on climate change with colloquials such as “the bus is leaving” or “get on the bus!”. In Cancun however, these phrases have taken on a whole new meaning as those participating in COP16 found out today.
After sitting in a traffic jam along with hundreds of other participants for about an hour and a half from our hotel in the Hotel Zone to the Cancunmesse, the WEDO team finally arrived at the venue, well half of the venue that is! The logistics of this years…

Cancun, Mexico- On Monday, November 29th at the opening session of the AWG-LCA (Ad hoc Working Group on Long Term Cooperative Action), WEDO’s Rachel Harris delivered an intervention on behalf of the Women and Gender Consituency. The statement stressed the importance of coming to a consensus on the most critical issue of our time and ensuring gender dimensions are taken into account throughout all areas of the negotiations. Cancun, Mexico– Women are key stakeholders in adaptation. Access to voluntary family planning is an important part of strengthening women’s capacity as leaders in adaptation, yet in too many places around the world access to these services is limited. Reducing unintended pregnancies and giving families the tools to determine family size can improve socio-economic status of women, reduce strain on the environment, and improve resource conservation – all of which make significant contributions to resilience in the face of climate change.
