On Wednesday, the Rio Pavilion at COP17 celebrated Gender Day! As part of this, WEDO’s Andrea Quesada presented at a side event on “Gender and the Art of Implementation”, to showcase some of the work WEDO has been doing on developing gender-sensitive road maps on REDD+ in Uganda, Cameroon and Ghana, in partnership with IUCN. At one of the first meetings of the Women & Gender Caucus at the COP17, participants from Africa welcomed the caucus in beautiful song to remind us of the power of women’s organizing. The message was particularly powerful as at COP17, the Women and Gender Constituency are celebrating gaining official status in the UNFCCC!

Women Delegates Fund “Night School”

Friday to Sunday – November 25th- 27th

In collaboration with GGCA partner, IUCN, WEDO took part in a three day night school and capacity building program for the participants of the Women Delegates Fund (WDF). The aim of the program was to assist each of the delegates to build roadmaps for implementation on gender and climate change at the national level as well as to build capacity in the negotiations. WDF Delegate Patience Damptey from Ghana said “[the night school] helped us to articulate what we have done and gave us the opportunity to move the issue of gender and climate change at the national level through specific actions.”

WEDO at COP17: Priorities, Events, Team and More!

Durban, South Africa- November 27th 2011

The final session of the 2011 UNFCCC negotiations, COP17, commences tomorrow in Durban, South Africa. At the conference, Parties must find areas of convergence in order to ensure that women, men, girls and boys can fully adapt to and mitigate the ever-more prevalent and severe impacts of climate change.

Climate change talks enter final stretch in Durban: What can we expect at the end of 2011?

It was only a year ago today that we were preparing for the climate COP16 in Cancun, uncertain if the 2010 meetings would finally result in substantial decisions on climate change or if we would see a repeat of COP15. Against a backdrop of lowered ambition and frustration, strong leadership and political will prevailed, and Cancun produced a set of decisions (see WEDO article on Cancun decisions), unparalleled since the Bali COP in 2007, to carry the process forward.
