Graduate Fellowships and Undergraduate Internships

Fellowship and internship applications (for graduate students and undergrads, respectively,) are accepted on a rolling basis. The duration of each fellowship/internship depends on the needs of the fellow/intern and WEDO programs. A minimum two-month commitment is required and applicants available for longer commitments are encouraged. Fellows/interns will conduct research and writing, provide administrative assistance, attend meetings, and undertake other tasks as necessary, under the direction of the relevant programmatic staff. Ideal candidates will have:

  • Enthusiasm for and commitment to WEDO’s mission and goals
  • Some knowledge, practical or academic, of the program area in which s/he applies to work
  • Excellent research, writing, and oral communication skills
  • The ability to complete all tasks (mundane to substantive) in a careful, timely manner
  • Experience working in an office, coupled with an ability to undertake multiple tasks, sometimes under time pressure
  • A sense of humor, an ability to work well in teams, and a desire to work in an informal environment
  • The ability to work at least 10-15 hours/week
  • Fluency in a foreign language is highly desirable but not required

Internships and fellowships are unpaid. We regret that we are unable to pay relocation costs to New York.

Current Opportunities for Winter/Spring 2012

Fundraising and Event Planning
WEDO is looking for a creative, dedicated, and self-reliant individual with excellent communication, social media and time-management skills. Working with the Communications Coordinator and Executive Director, the intern will support coordination of a fundraising campaign around WEDO’s 20th anniversary celebrations. Specifically this intern will conduct research on online fundraising tools, maintain a donor database, and support the design and organization of receptions and fundraising events. The intern will support other administrative duties, as necessary.

Social Media/Communications
WEDO is looking for a creative, dedicated, and organized individual to join our team as social media/ communications intern. This intern will provide support to the Communications Coordinator on progressive outreach campaigning using social media (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc) as well as other communications outputs such as website content, newsletters, listserve, and press releases. Specific focus will be on the WEDO 20+ Campaign, celebrating WEDO’s 20 year history!

Specifically, the Social Media/ Communications Intern will: Employ creativity and resourcefulness in strengthening WEDO’s web presence; Actively use Twitter and Facebook for outreach; Contribute to the drafting of press releases and newsletters; Research social media tools/ strategies used by variety of sectors to identify areas of best practice and make recommendations; Monitor relevant news and information on the organization and our areas of work including: climate change, sustainable development, UN activities, women’s rights; Support the development of staff handbook on use of website and social media; Support website maintenance and update/ monitor social media tools; and, Support general office and administrative tasks.

Beyond ideal qualifications for all WEDO interns listed above, the Social Media/ Communications Internship will have:

  • An open, dynamic, and entrepreneurial work ethic
  • Passion for Web 2.0 technologies and creating social movements with new media
  • Established presence/experience in several of the following social spaces: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, WordPress, MySpace, Flickr, Google Buzz, LinkedIn.

Non-Profit Management/ Administrative/ Research
WEDO is recruiting a creative, flexible, patient multi-tasker with excellent communications skills to work closely with the Executive Director, supporting program staff and the International Board of Directors. Ideal candidates will be graduate-level students in non-profit management, international affairs or women’s studies programs, with fluency in English and competency in at least Spanish or French. Excellent writing, verbal and research skills are a must. Minimum 15 hours/week for 3 months. Key activities will include:

  • Research and direct outreach to women’s organizations in partner countries
  • Developing a database of current women’s organizations partners
  • Research on and outreach to foundations and other donors
  • Research on current data and case studies to support WEDO programmatic positions
  • Administrative support to the ED
  • Assistance in developing organizational materials
  • Representing WEDO at UN and other meetings

Sustainable Development/Rio+20
WEDO is looking for a dynamic and self-directed person to support preparations for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in June 2012. Rio+20 will focus on two main concepts: an international framework for sustainable development and a ‘green economy.’ Responsibilities of the fellow may include the following: research on the concepts; updating staff on the activities and positions of women’s networks, as well as other stakeholders, around the world; drafting and editing articles, posts and position papers; supporting Women’s Rio+20 website content; supporting logistics for related international meetings; attending and reporting back on meetings in New York; maintaining a calendar of events; and assisting with general program and administrative duties. The ideal candidate will have familiarity with gender equality/women’s rights issues, the UN, and/or international agreements related to sustainable development/environment. Graduate students preferred.
