Graduate Fellowships and Undergraduate Internships
Fellowship and internship applications (for graduate students and undergrads, respectively,) are accepted on a rolling basis. The duration of each fellowship/internship depends on the needs of the fellow/intern and WEDO programs. A minimum two-month commitment is required and applicants available for longer commitments are encouraged.

Fellows/interns will conduct research and writing, provide administrative assistance, attend meetings, and undertake other tasks as necessary, under the direction of the relevant programmatic staff.

Ideal candidates will have:

  • Enthusiasm for and commitment to WEDO’s mission and goals
  • Some knowledge, practical or academic, of the program area in which s/he applies to work
  • Excellent research, writing, and oral communication skills
  • The ability to complete all tasks (mundane to substantive) in a careful, timely manner
  • Experience working in an office, coupled with an ability to undertake multiple tasks, sometimes under time pressure
  • A sense of humor, an ability to work well in teams, and a desire to work in an informal environment
  • The ability to work at least 10-15 hours/week
  • Fluency in a foreign language is highly desirable but not required

Internships and fellowships are unpaid. We regret that we are unable to pay relocation costs to New York.

Specific Opportunities:
1)    Global Climate Change Monitoring and Advocacy
Topic: Climate Change
Objective: To contribute to the global climate change work through research and advocacy support
Tasks: Follow international climate change news and prepare weekly updates on pertinent climate change issues for internal use; draft press releases and articles for website and listservs; attend meetings at UN and elsewhere and take and share notes; support global climate change advocacy efforts (preparation of materials; travel arrangements, etc.) at UNFCCC and other global fora; general office and administrative tasks
 

2)    Gender and Climate Change Research
Topic: Climate Change
Objective: To contribute to WEDO’s ongoing research projects on gender and climate change
Tasks: Research current articles and meeting reports generally relevant to gender and climate change (including food security, water, etc.); organize and maintain an electronic library of resources for internal use, including abstracts of existing articles; support other projects with specific research focus; draft short research papers/sections in collaboration with program staff; fact check and support editing of WEDO articles and publications; general office and administrative tasks
 

3)    US Legislation Monitoring and Evaluation
Topic: Climate Change
Objective: Keep WEDO up to date on recent events in U.S. policy and legislation impacting global climate change issues
Tasks: Follow domestic news on climate change policy and legislation for internal weekly reporting and strategic planning; participate in New York meetings, national calls and teleconferences concerning domestic climate policy, and take and share notes; closely monitor drafts of climate change legislation and concurrent resolutions or legislation in the Senate and the House for information applicable to WEDO’s global gender and climate change advocacy; general office and administrative tasks
 

4)    UN Reform Monitoring and Advocacy
Topic: Gender Equality Architecture Reform (GEAR)
Objective: To contribute to the goals of the GEAR Campaign
Tasks: The GEAR intern/fellow will assist program staff in monitoring government and UN action in establishing the new gender entity under the UN system; contribute to research and writing on the topic; liaise with regional focal points and other partners; help set up and attend meetings with governments; draft press releases and other updates for the WEDO website; general office and administrative tasks.

5)    Online Outreach
Topic: Communications
Objective: To support and strengthen WEDO’s efforts to stay connected online, via web support, listservs, newsletters, press releases and blogs
Tasks: The communications intern/fellow will employ creativity and resourcefulness in strengthening WEDO’s web presence; drafting press releases and ‘WEDO statements’; contributing to WEDO newsletters; updating WEDO listservs and former blogs; general office and administrative tasks

6)    Development
Topic: Fundraising and donor relations
Objective: To support WEDO in the identification of grant opportunities and the maintenance of current relations
Tasks: Research governments and private and corporate foundations that match WEDO’s mission and philosophy; identify and log basic details (giving focus, typical grant size, etc.); track donations and send thank you letters; support fundraising through administrative tasks, including schedules and correspondence; general office and administrative tasks
