WEDO conducted a rigorous campaign for women’s labor rights in Nike-contracted factories through 2008-2009. Since the early ’90s, Nike has been pressured by activists and media to address sweatshop conditions and labor rights violations in its supply chain, where women comprise 80-90 percent of workers.

As a result, Nike became the first in its industry to disclose its subcontracted factory locations, institute a Code of Conduct to address minimum wages, freedom of association, gender and maternity discrimination, and employ independent monitors to assess code compliance.

Unfortunately, Nike’s stated commitment to high labor standards has not translated into consistent practice, and widespread violations of labor rights continue.

WEDO is working with women’s rights organizers, trade unions, consumers and Nike representatives to address current challenges and push for new company practices that create real change for its women workers.

WEDO is also building a next-phase campaign to address corporate accountability in the fight against climate change. Stay tuned for updates and actions!
