Women’s Major Group speaks out on the Rio+20 Zero Draft
“The zero-draft fails to raise our enthusiasm, it lacks ambition, concrete proposals for global instruments necessary to address the shortcomings of the last 20 years, concrete targets and time lines and funding mechanisms. The emerging crisis of climate change increases the urgency for an outcome document that reflects the urgent need for environmental justice.
Many women’s lives and livelihoods suffer from the current injustices. We feel that the sections 1 and 2 should strongly voice the failure of the neo-liberal system, where corporate interests have priority over human lives – and should acknowledge that small adjustments are not enough. A major paradigm shift is necessary.”

At one of the first meetings of the Women & Gender Caucus at the COP17, participants from Africa welcomed the caucus in beautiful song to remind us of the power of women’s organizing. The message was particularly powerful as at COP17, the Women and Gender Constituency are celebrating gaining official status in the UNFCCC!

Rural women bear the brunt of climate change impacts. The crucial resources of food, water, and fuel – whose collection rural women are responsible for – are being threatened by changes in temperature, precipitation rates, and natural disasters. In the face of altered rural landscapes, women, already at an economic, social, and cultural disadvantage, must take on other livelihood activities to support themselves and their families.

UNGA High-Level Meeting on Desertification: Recognizing the Role of Women
On Tuesday, 20 September 2011, member states participated at the United Nations General Assembly high-level meeting on the theme, “Addressing desertification, land degradation and drought in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication.” Click here for full reports from the event.
