WEDO Congratulates UN Women on its First Week in Operation

New York– On January 1, 2011, UN Women—the new women’s empowerment and gender equality body that consolidates the four smaller women and gender agencies of the UN—officially became operational. Although UN Women has not received as much recognition as it deserves, it is one of the greatest achievements of the United Nations in the 21st Century.

New York, New York– The GEAR Campaign is proud to launch a ”TRANSITIONAL TOOLKIT FOR CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS“, with recommendations on how civil society can engage with UN Women.

Created on July 2, 2010, UN Women is the result of years of advocacy by civil society. The new entity combines the mandates of the four existing UN structures for women into one new, higher level UN organization with both policy and operational functions.

New York– The Gender Equality Architecture Reform (GEAR) Campaign is thrilled that the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon has chosen Michelle Bachelet as the new Under-Secretary-General (USG) of UN Women. This appointment is essential to the effectiveness of the new entity and the campaign is pleased that the UN SG has selected a qualified and strong leader for this high level UN position that will envision and work for the future of women’s rights and advocate for women worldwide.

UN Women Born:Civil Society Celebrates Creation of Gender Equality Entity After Four Years of Advocacy

New York, July 1 2010 – The Gender Equality Architecture Reform (GEAR) Campaign celebrates the United Nations General Assembly resolution, agreed to on 30 June and to be formally adopted by the General Assembly on Friday, 2 July, to establish “UN Women”—the new gender equality entity at the UN. This move has been sought by women’s organizations and other civil society organizations around the world since the UN established a System-Wide Coherence Panel for UN Reform in 2006.
