U.S. Action Campaign

From Katrina to Copenhagen: Women Demand U.S. Action On Climate Change

Only swift and sustained global action will stave off the direct consequences of climate change. Yet the United States, unquestionably a world super power, has so far only begun to join the global effort to address climate change.

Since 2008, the Women Demand U.S. Action on Climate Change Campaign has sought to mobilize women across America to push for mandatory reduction of greenhouse gases and re-engagement in UN negotiations on the post-2012 global climate change framework.

In 2009, WEDO was pleased to see the U.S. delegation engaged in the multilateral process and present at each of the UNFCCC meetings. President Obama’s Ambassador for women’s issues made gender and climate change one of her key issues. And three U.S. Congresswomen also presented a Resolution to Congress on women and climate change.

WEDO works with partners ‘on the hill’ to lobby for gender language in the current domestic legislation and supports the U.S. State Department and other government agencies on gender responsive positions at the global level.
