Entitled “Attending to Gender,” this issue contains, amongst other pieces, a look at the breakthrough in gender references at the COP16, articles on gender-mainstreaming efforts in REDD+ programs, a tribute to legendary activist Wangari Maathai, and a thought-provoking piece by Jeannette Gurung of WOCAN on why women have traditionally been excluded from the world of forestry.

Particularly striking are the field-level articles, which related stories of women’s relationships to forests across the globe. Some of the subjects examined are:…

Day 1 at COP16: Get on the bus!

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Cancun, Mexico- In the halls of the UNFCCC negotiations its not uncommon to hear calls for action on climate change with colloquials such as “the bus is leaving” or “get on the bus!”. In Cancun however, these phrases have taken on a whole new meaning as those participating in COP16 found out today.

    Saturday, December 12th, 2009

Copenhagen, SBSTA Pleanry Session, December 12–Madame Chair, thank you for this opportunity. I speak on behalf of WEDO.

REDD  provides potential opportunities for positive outcomes for forest dependent communities, but also risks serious negative outcomes, especially for women who rely on forest resources to sustain their families’ livelihoods. Current discussions on REDD are very weak with respect to the gender dimensions and to its impacts on women who have few or no options to use the forest  for sources of fuelwood, livestock feed, medicines, and even food in times of scarcity. It is crucial that this gap be addressed so …
