Urgent! Call for Help for Haiti

New York, January 13 — WEDO urges you to contribute to partners’ funds for urgent earthquake relief. Reputable, effective funds include Oxfam, MADRE, InterAction and the American Red Cross.

InterAction has compiled a list of agencies that are responding to the earthquake, with links as well as a description of what donations each agency is accepting and the work they are doing.

Our thoughts are with all our Haitian colleagues and friends.

U.S. Under Secretary of State speaks about Women and Climate Change

New York, January 5 — Maria Otero, the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs, discusses women and climate change in a short video available on YouTube. In her December 10 statement she notes that women are part of the solution to climate change and references a meeting she had with NGOs, including WEDO, during the UNFCCC COP15 in Copenhagen in December.

Greetings Climate Change Advocates!

Gender CC is a network of advocates involved in the climate change negotiations in the lead up to this year’s major International Climate Change Conference to be held in Copenhagen in December. We recently submitted an application to form a gender/women’s constituency under the United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)—the overall framework for intergovernmental efforts to tackle the challenges posed by climate change.

NEW! A Resource Kit: Climate Change Connections

New York, October 15–Climate Change Connections, a comprehensive resource kit on gender, population and climate change, was launched today by the United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA) and the Women’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO).

The resource kit presents an overview of gender and climate change in the context of policy, finance, adaptation plans, best practices, and advocacy tools. It argues for a new convergence in thinking and practice that aligns the efforts of governments, aid organizations, and the general public, to ensure that women contribute to and benefit from equitable climate solutions.
